Is There an ISS Pass Tonight?

Whether there's a pass depends on your location and the calendar, not on wanting one badly enough. Here's how to actually find out, and what makes a pass worth the walk outside.

Is there a visible pass tonight?

That depends on two things that have nothing to do with wanting one: your exact location, and the date. The International Space Station orbits roughly every 93 minutes, but it's only visible to the naked eye during a narrow window -- the hour or so after sunset, or the hour or so before sunrise, when your sky is dark enough to see a point of light against it, while the station itself, hundreds of kilometers up, is still catching direct sunlight. Outside that window, either the sky's too bright or the station has flown into Earth's own shadow and isn't lit at all. Not every night lines up a pass inside that window from a given spot on the ground -- some nights there's nothing to see no matter how clear the sky is.

What makes a pass worth going outside for?

Not every technically-overhead pass is worth the walk. A pass that only grazes 10-15 degrees above the horizon is real, but it's a dim, brief smudge low in the sky, often lost behind buildings before you find it. The bar worth clearing is a peak elevation of 30 degrees or more -- roughly a third of the way from the horizon to straight overhead. Below that, most trackers built around a real quality bar (SpacePings included) don't consider it notification-worthy at all.

Brightness helps once you're looking in the right place. The ISS's reference brightness is about magnitude -1.8, and on a good overhead pass it reaches roughly -3 -- brighter than every star in the sky, no exceptions. You won't need to squint to find it.

Will I still see it if it's cloudy?

No, and this is the condition every purely orbital-mechanics calculation misses: geometry can be perfect -- high elevation, dark sky, a bright satellite -- and a cloud deck between you and the pass still means you see nothing. It's the one gate that isn't astronomy at all, and it's also the one that can change its mind by the time you're actually looking up, since forecasts shift hour to hour.

How do I know it's really the ISS and not a plane?

The ISS is the easiest thing in the sky to identify once you know the shape: a single, steady, fast-moving point of light, crossing from one side of the sky toward the other in a straight line over a few minutes, with no blinking, no color change, and no stopping.
